The Praise House Project is a site-specific public art installation by artist activist, Charmaine Minniefield, which upholds the African American histories and narratives of the area in an effort to address issues of erasure and systemic inequities. The Praise House currently rests at Beacon Hill in Downtown Decatur, to remember this historic community known to as “The Bottom”, established during Reconstruction as a freedmen’s town, largely destroyed by the FDR Housing Act of 1937, leveling the shotgun houses, displacing generations of families to make room for public housing and city offices.

The project is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Artist, DeKalb County CEO Michael L. Thurmond’s Office, the City Schools of Decatur, the City of Decatur and the Decatur Tourism Bureau. Community partners include Agnes Scott College, the Dekalb History Center and the Beacon Hill Black Alliance.
