Book Banning in America with Amanda Jones

Join Amanda Jones, President of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians and 2021 School Library Journal Co-Librarian of the Year, as she presents her book That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America. With 23 years of experience, Jones is a leading advocate for inclusivity and diverse literature. Her memoir details her fight against book bans and censorship, sharing her journey from personal threats to statewide resistance. That Librarian explores the ongoing crisis in book banning and calls for action to protect essential narratives in schools and libraries.

The speaker session will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 1:45 PM on the City of Decatur Stage 1, Decatur B Ballroom, in the Conference Center of the Marriott Courtyard Hotel. Moderated by Lisa A. Macklin, a distinguished librarian and lawyer with extensive experience in copyright law and digital scholarship, the event will feature a 45-minute discussion. Following the session, Amanda will proceed to the signing tables to autograph books.

About the Moderator

In her role as Associate Vice Provost and University Librarian for Emory University, Lisa Macklin oversees a diverse portfolio of libraries, including the Goizueta Business Library, Robert W. Woodruff Library, Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, and Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library, as well as Academic Technology Services. With expertise as both a librarian and a lawyer, she is passionate about copyright law’s impact on teaching, research, and publishing, and is actively involved in the Open Access movement and digital scholarship. Lisa has led initiatives such as creating a Model Publishing Contract for Digital Scholarship with a Mellon Foundation grant and co-developed MOOCs on copyright, alongside publishing extensively on the intersection of copyright and libraries.
